Young flicker in the nest calls out for food and attention while the mother remains out of sight on the back of the tree.
This is a male of the red-shafted variety, identified by the red "moustache." He is also hiding from the young flicker, but peeking over the top of the nearby dead tree so he can observe wht the young one does.
The parents have flown off without feeding or acknowledging the young bird. I think they are trying to coax it out of the nest and encourage independence.
